Mammography is the most common procedure used to screen for and diagnose breast cancer. It uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breast. During a mammogram, an X-ray image of the breast is taken from many different angles. The pictures are then put together on a computer in order to look for signs of breast cancer or other abnormal conditions.
What is Digital Mammography?
Digital Mammography is specialized medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breasts. A mammography exam, often known as a mammogram, helps women discover and diagnose breast illnesses early.
How does Mammography work?
- A patient's breast is placed on a flat support plate and squeezed with a parallel plate called a paddle.
- An X-ray machine emits a brief burst of radiation that travels through the breast to a detector on the other side.
- A photographic film plate, which records the X-ray picture on film, or a solid-state detector, which transfers electrical signals to a computer to generate a digital image, can be used as the detector. The pictures created are mammograms.
