Prostate Biopsy
A prostate biopsy is carried out to remove a sample of the abnormal tissue. In males, the prostate is a tiny gland with a walnut-like form that secretes sperm-nourishing fluid. A needle is used to take many tissue samples from your prostate gland during a prostate biopsy. Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer among males. It affects the prostate gland, which plays a role in producing semen.
Why should you do it?
- A prostate biopsy serves the purpose of detecting prostate cancer.
- Your doctor or nurse uses this information to determine which treatment choices are best for you if you have prostate cancer.
- If any lumps or abnormalities or found during a digital rectal exam.
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test shows levels higher than normal for your age.
- Your previous biopsy reported normal results but you still have increased PSA levels.
How should you prepare?
Your doctor must instruct you to do the following before your prostate biopsy:
- A prostate biopsy cannot be carried out if you have a urinary tract infection. So, get it examined by giving your urine sample. If you have contracted the infection, take the medications.
- For a few days before the surgery, refrain from taking medications that can increase the risk of bleeding, such as warfarin (Jantoven), aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others), and certain herbal supplements.
